Gryphon I rocket

In LURA’s first year, we set out to design and build the Gryphon I sounding rocket to compete at the Spaceport America Cup 2022. As chief engineer, I took the project from concept through to successful launch.

  • Recruited, led and managed a team of +20 engineers.
  • Overseen the design, development, testing, fabrication and implementation activities.
  • Developed and maintained project plans, schedules, and budgets to ensure the successful completion of the project.
  • Ensured that all engineering activities met the technical requirements set out by the competition, the United Kingdom Rocketry Association, and the university.
  • Provided technical expertise and guidance to the engineering team, including reviewing technical documentation and providing feedback.
  • Managed risks associated with the technical development of rockets, and developed contingency plans as necessary.
  • Successfully designed, built, launched and recovered the Gryphon I-C (Level 2 HPR) rocket, and the Gryphon I (Level 3 HPR) rocket.

Out of 149 teams, Gryphon I placed fourth in its category and eighth overall. The project also received a second-place innovation award and achieved the best result by a UK team at the competition to date.
